Britain’s finest seaside spots for a short break have been revealed, featuring ‘coral’ shores, crystal-clear waters and classic beach huts dotted along the coastline. The UK boasts some truly spectacular landscapes, with its stunning stretches of coast playing a significant role. From Devon’s whitewashed cliffs to Somerset’s Victorian piers extending into the sea, and Cornwall’s turquoise waters rivalling those of the Caribbean.
With an impressive 1,500 beaches scattered across the UK, there’s no shortage of options for a weekend getaway or short seaside escape. Now, the finest among them have been identified, arriving at just the right moment before the May bank holiday weekends.
Research conducted by staycation specialists Sykes Holiday Cottages has unveiled the top 10 UK locations ideal for a brief coastal retreat. Whether you’re after a seaside haven set against mountain peaks, immaculate beaches with sugar-white sand, or classic seaside entertainment complete with a pleasure pier, there’s a destination for every taste.
Taking first place was the stunningly beautiful landscape of Scotland’s Isle of Skye, celebrated for its extensive coastlines set against dramatic mountains and lush green valleys. The beaches are remarkable, featuring crystal-clear waters, dark volcanic shores and crushed maerl at the renowned Claigan Coral Beach.
St Ives in Cornwall, renowned for its turquoise waters and golden sandy beaches, secured a close second position. Often referred to as the ‘Cornish California’, the coastal town has remained a perennial favourite amongst British holidaymakers, offering surfing beaches, a picturesque harbour and sheltered bays, reports the Mirror.
Perhaps unexpectedly, surpassing destinations in Devon, was the varied coastline of Whitby in North Yorkshire. West Cliff, its principal beach, features expansive stretches of golden sand, traditional beach huts and rock pools, set against a striking backdrop of rugged cliffs and the remains of the historic Whitby Abbey.
Claiming fourth place was the vibrant coast of Brighton in East Sussex, celebrated for its famous four-mile promenade, the historic Palace Pier overlooking its shingle beach, and Victorian arches. Known as ‘London by the Sea’, the resort boasts a dynamic atmosphere, an array of restaurants, shops and attractions, while maintaining its traditional seaside appeal.
Rounding out the top five was the Causeway Coast in Northern Ireland, distinguished by its 30-mile expanse of Atlantic shoreline, sandy beaches and white chalk cliffs. Villages, towns and harbours are scattered along the coast, providing an idyllic weekend retreat amidst its postcard-perfect scenery.
Although Devon narrowly missed the top five, its coastline at Torquay secured a place in the top 10, alongside Anglesey in North Wales and Bournemouth in Dorset. Cornwall, however, dominated the rankings, with both Newquay and Padstow also claiming spots in the top 10 best seaside destinations.
The Isle of Anglesey is situated off the northwest coast of Wales. This island destination boasts beautiful beaches and ancient sites and is popular with holidaymakers.
