Five and a half years after it was burnt to the ground, James and Hayley Baillie’s ultra-luxury hotel on Kangaroo Island was named on Tuesday as the American Express Travel “One To Watch” at The World’s 50 Best Hotels 2025.
Southern Ocean Lodge was razed during the January 2020 bushfires that burnt half of the South Australian island. It is celebrated for its combination of luxury and remoteness, looking across deserted beaches to the vast Southern Ocean. But when it comes to the World’s 50 Best Hotels list, considered the authority on must-book hotels, that remoteness might have counted against it.
