Perennial Aussie travel favourite Bali has been named the top destination in the world in Tripadvisor’s annual “Best of the Best” awards.

TripAdvisor called the Indonesian resort island – which draws about 1.5 million Australian visitors every year – a “living postcard” renowned for its lush landscapes and white-sand beaches.

The holiday website’s annual Travellers’ Choice Awards Best of the Best awards go to destinations, attractions and accommodation that get a high volume of above-and-beyond reviews and opinions from travellers in the previous year. Tripadvisor says that represents less than 1 per cent of its 8 million listing.

Another favourite Australian destination, London, was runner-up in the 2026 list, followed by Dubai, Hanoi, Paris and Rome.

Tripadvisor’s chief communications officer Laurel Greatrix said the platform was the world’s most trusted for travel and was “built on the experiences of millions of global travellers”.

“From iconic cities like Bangkok and London to cultural hubs, serene beach escapes, and romantic getaways across Madeira, Singapore, Bali, and beyond, the Best of the Best destinations showcase the places that make every journey unforgettable — and inspire travellers to explore the world with confidence,” she said.

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, Indonesia accounted for 14 per cent of all Aussie international holidays in 2024-25 – with Bali far and away the most popular place to head to.

It has just been pipped by Japan as our top Asian holiday spot. In February, Japan accounted for 103,360 trips, edging out Indonesia on 101,630.

Some of Tripadvisor’s top recommendations for things to do in Bali included the Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary in Ubud, boat trips to other islands and the Museum PASIFIKA in Nusa Dua.

Tripadvisor said London, which took out second spot, was “many worlds in one”.

Dubai, meanwhile, was described as “a destination that mixes modern culture with history, adventure with world-class shopping and entertainment”.

The reputation of the capital of the United Arab Emirates has taken a bruising in recent weeks after the US-Israel war on Iran led to it being directly targeted by missiles.

Another honorary mention in the Tripadvisor list went to Manly Beach, which was rated the ninth best in the world.

In a list dominated by Mediterranean and North American beaches, Manly was noted for being “at the centre of everything – literally”.

“Just a quick ride from the Sydney CBD, it’s surrounded by shops, cafes, and more. Go swimming or surfing in the ocean or take a dip in the saltwater pool. Then, go for a stroll along the long beach walkway and take in the panoramic views,” Tripadvisor said.

A Bali beach, Kelingking on the small island of Nusa Penida, came in 16th.

Kelingking Beach is famous for its dramatic T-Rex-shaped cliff formation, white sands and turquoise waters. It also offers a challenging 400-metre hike down to the secluded sand.

“The clear water is perfect for snorkelling and exploring underwater life, and the sunsets are truly photo-worthy,” Tripadvisor noted.

“It’s easy to get to and has ample parking, yet still maintains a secluded, relaxed vibe (bonus: It also has restrooms).”
