Balkerne Water Tower, also known as Jumbo, will be open to the public for one final time as more tour dates are added.
The 142-year-old water tower is being restored to its former glory and is being transformed into a commercially viable facility to pay for the building’s upkeep.
The landmark is due to close for its main construction phase in December and plans reopen in 2027.
And now North Essex Heritage is adding some last-chance tours around Jumbo, due to overwhelming demand.
Public events include a tour up the 157-step tower, panoramic views of the city from 40 metres off the ground and an informative talk about its history.
A spokesperson for Jumbo said: “Due to overwhelming demand, we’re thrilled to announce a limited number of public tours are now available before we close for refurbishment.
“Act fast; they won’t last long!”
Jumbo was built by Everett & Sons builders of Hythe Hill, Colchester and cost a huge £11,138 when it opened in September 1883.
The tank could hold 230,000 gallons, which weighed 1,000 tons.
Tickets will be available for public tours taking place on October 18, 19, 25 and 26 as well as November 1 and 2.
Two tours will be held on these dates at 1pm and 2.30pm.
Tickets will be available on October 14, at 10am, with tickets priced at £12 per person.
