According to travel experts at On The Beach, March is a “sweet spot for travel deals” as flights, accommodation and activities “tend to cost less”.
For budget trips that give you an earlier dose of warm sunshine, there are four top destinations to consider: the Canaries, Morocco, Portugal’s Algarve, and Turkey.
The Canary Islands include Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, La Palma, Fuerteventura, El Hierro, La Gomera, and Isla Graciosa.
Average temperatures across the Canary Islands range from 20C to 25C, so it’s the ideal landscape to relax, unwind and enjoy the warm glow of the sun without it feeling too hot.
Water sports enthusiasts are best positioned to go to Fuerteventura, where you can do activities such as windsurfing, kitesurfing and mountain bike tours.
Lanzarote is characterised by the artist César Manrique, black lava fields, and those seeking more peace and quiet.
Tenerife is famed for its nightlife in places such as Santa Cruz and Playa de las Américas.
Las Palmas, on the other hand, has a historic old town, a beautiful cathedral and vibrant city life.
Moving on from the Canary Islands to Morocco, Fez is a top destination to consider if you want to get a taste of the country’s history.
The National Geographic called Fez “Morocco’s spiritual heart” that has a “car-free Medina” where trade crafts such as wood carving and tile work feature heavily.
Meanwhile, Marrakesh – the “pink city” – is one of the best spots to experience an “enticing labyrinth of centuries-old souks”.
Heading in a different direction, Portugal’s Algarve has Sagres, Faro, Carvoeiro, Silves, Tavira, Lagos, Carrapateira, and Galé – to name a few of the areas.
Depending on the type of holiday you would like, the different places cater to different needs.
For example, Lonely Planet recommended Sagres for surfing, Faro for a taste of history, Carvoeiro for a family trip, and Silves for in-land exploring.
Tavira is said to be a great destination for culture, wine and music; Lagos is best for dining and nightlight; and Carrapateria has “wild beauty”; meanwhile, Galé is considered the ideal trip for a romantic getaway with your lover.
Moving onto Turkey, Thomas Cook suggested flying off to the southern Mediterranean coastline, but to be prepared for some rain.
The travel agency noted: “Popular Antalya on Turkey’s south coast has an average high temperature of 18C during March, which is perfectly warm enough for relaxing on the beach.”
