Starting this May, visitors and locals alike can take part in a variety of exciting, volunteer-led experiences that showcase the rich history, wildlife, and ongoing restoration of the Cotswold Canals.

All proceeds from the trips and tours go directly towards supporting the restoration efforts of the canals, making these activities an ideal way to explore the stunning landscape while contributing to the ongoing environmental work.

Guided Walking Tours

The Cotswold Canals Trust will offer a series of guided walking tours from May to September on Saturdays, starting at 10:30 AM.

Each tour is led by passionate volunteers who will share fascinating insights about the canal’s history, its restoration process, and its importance to the local community and wildlife.

Tour Options:

  • Walk 1: Our Industrial Heritage
    Route: Wallbridge to Ebley, Stroud
    Duration: 90 minutes (+ 30 minutes return)
    Highlights: The last operational mill in the Stroud Valleys, the Dudbridge hydro-electricity scheme, the iconic Ebley Mill, and stories from canal barge workers.
  • Walk 2: The Challenge of Restoration
    Route: Stonehouse to Westfield Bridge
    Duration: 90 minutes (+ 30 minutes return)
    Highlights: The Ocean railway bridge, embankment & bridge replacement at Bonds Mill, the restoration of Eastington locks, and the challenge of crossing the M5.
  • Walk 3: Nature and Environmental Preservation
    Route: Fromebridge to Saul Junction
    Duration: 90 minutes (+ 30 minutes return)
    Highlights: Fromebridge wetland nature reserve, restoration of Occupation Bridge, the merging of the canal with the River Frome, and the Gloucester and Sharpness canal.
  • Walk 4: Mills and Locks
    Route: Wallbridge to Stroud Brewery
    Duration: 90 minutes (+ 30 minutes return)
    Highlights: The historic Stroudwater Navigation, restored locks, and former mill sites, ending with a refreshing visit to Stroud Brewery.

Boat Trips

In addition to the walking tours, the Cotswold Canals Trust is also offering its  boat trips for the 2025 season.

These volunteer-led trips offer a unique opportunity to explore the canals from the water, with several routes available from April to September.

Boat Trip Options:

  • “Adventure” at Saul Junction
    Dates: Wednesdays in June and July
    June 11th, 18th and 25th
    July 2nd, 9th, 23rd and 30th
    Times: Departing at 2pm – 2hr trips
    Accessibility: Fully accessible
    Walk-ins: Welcome on most trips, pre booking is advised
    Private Charters: Available by request, £60 per hour (two hour minimum), max 12 passengers. Requires at least 14 days’ advance booking
  • “Perseverance” at Wallbridge Lock
    Dates: Saturdays, April – September
    Departing: 10 AM, 10:45 AM, 11:30 AM, 12:45 PM, 1:30 PM, 2:15 PM, 3 PM, 3:45 PM
    Walk-ins: Welcome on most trips (except 3:45 PM, pre-booking required)
  • “Inglesham” at Lechlade (Private Charters)
    Dates: May – September
    Duration: £60 per hour, max 12 passengers
    Booking: Requires at least 14 days’ advance booking
  • “Endeavour” at Ebley (Private Charters)
    Dates: May – October
    Duration: £60 per hour (two hour minimum), max 10 passengers
    Booking: Requires at least 14 days’ advance booking
