It has been named one of the best places to visit in the UK in 2026 by Time Out, with the Midlands city experiencing a major cultural and tourism revival thanks to new venues, restaurants and events
It may be time to step outside your comfort zone and explore some of the most underappreciated destinations, as this Midlands city secures its spot on the ‘best places to visit in the UK’ list for 2026.
Time Out revealed at the beginning of the year their definitive ‘must-visit’ list, featuring 14 UK towns and cities that deserve a place on your travel radar. Some destinations earned their spot through exciting new attractions, others for their ‘quiet brilliance’, and some for their ground-breaking cultural events and food scenes.
Some may be surprised to discover that coming in at number seven on the list, out of everywhere in the UK, was Derby, in the East Midlands.
Look beyond the shuttered shops blighting the city centre and the faded bars that once buzzed with nightlife, and it becomes clear that Derby is steadily evolving into a revitalised cultural hotspot.
While Derby has long established itself as a go-to base for those exploring the rugged peaks of the Peak District and meandering through its charming villages, the city itself is only now beginning to earn genuine recognition amongst visitors, thanks to fresh investment and initiatives aimed at transforming its appeal.
Entertainment
The city has welcomed several new additions that can only serve to bolster its nightlife and entertainment offering further, catering to both ends of the spectrum. A brand new 3,500-capacity warehouse club called ULTRA burst onto the scene for Midlands ravers on New Year’s Eve 2025.
The venue has already played host to a string of events, drawing music enthusiasts to its industrial park setting to revel in massive sounds within a cutting-edge production space. Some may say the dance floor is dying, but this hotspot has certainly breathed new life into the clubbing scene for the city’s younger generation.
Over at Elvaston Castle, families can look forward to a packed calendar of events throughout the year, building on those that have already taken place. From outdoor cinema nights and live music performances to food and drink festivals and much more, the stunning 320-acre estate provides an ideal backdrop for a dose of culture.
Even without any events on, it’s a wonderful spot to stroll around and take in the sprawling grounds on the city’s outskirts.
Another exciting newcomer, situated right in the heart of the city, is Valliant Live — a vibrant destination for concerts and live performances, with a capacity of 3,500. Having opened its doors in April 2025, the venue has already attracted a wealth of well-known comedians, bands and artists, who have added it to their demanding touring schedules as they pass through the city.
With bars, clubs, pubs and restaurants all within easy reach, concert-goers can pour out of the venue straight into the bustling city centre and make the most of its thriving nightlife.
One of Derby’s biggest draws is its vast shopping centre, Derbion, packed with designer and high street brands alongside a cinema, bowling alley, food court and restaurants — meaning you can easily while away a wet Midlands day entirely under one roof, with little reason to venture outside.
Restaurants
Pushing the boundaries of Derby’s culinary and events scene for both residents and visitors alike is homegrown independent hospitality operator Bustler, which has ambitious plans to transform a city centre car park into a vibrant new food and drink destination.
The St James Yard development is expected to feature around 20 shipping containers spread across two floors, housing a diverse range of food and drink stalls, alongside retailers championing independent businesses throughout the East Midlands.
This past year alone has seen a wave of exciting new eateries spring up across the city, bringing fresh flavours and dining experiences to some stunning buildings. Among them is La Burrata, which first opened its doors in August 2025, nestled within the Old Fire Station at Darley Abbey Mills, offering an authentic Italian menu.
Adding yet more character to the city centre is another fantastic restaurant, ideal for a pre-gig dinner or a post-shopping treat. Situated within the River Lights complex, tucked behind the bus station, The Engine Room serves all-day menus ranging from hearty breakfasts through to pizzas, grilled dishes and much more.
As an increasing number of businesses expand throughout the city and local enterprises discover fresh approaches to innovation, it’s evident that Derby is emerging as a destination offering greater appeal for UK residents seeking a city break or day trip.
