The travel magazine said the Isle of Arran was “Scotland in Miniature” and one of the best destinations in the UK thanks to it’s idyllic “ragged mountains” and “rolling fields”.

The stunning island is in Ayrshire on the west coast of Scotland.

The magazine highlighted other locations around the country including Edinburgh, Cornwall and Eryi National Park in Snowdonia.

Lonely Planet said: “From the waves breaking against the White Cliffs of Dover to the soaring Scottish Highlands, the UK is an ancient and starkly beautiful land.

“But within these wild scenes is a country with a dense cultural legacy stretching back centuries, offering fascinating sojourns into music, literature, food and much more.”

Travellers can visit the gorgeous location by getting a ferry from Troon or Ardrossan.

There are multiple things to do and see on the island with stunning views and amazing wildlife.

Many people travel to the island to climb Goatfell and visit Brodick Castle, run by the National Trust for Scotland.

It was announced at the beginning of this year that Arran was officially inscribed as a UNESCO Global Geopark.

The island encompasses 600 million years of Earth’s history in terrestrial and marine zones.

UNESCO said: “The island’s remarkable landscape tells a story of tectonic plate collisions, the shifting of continents from the southern hemisphere, the opening of the Atlantic Ocean and the sculpting of alpine mountains by glaciers.”

There are nine other UNESCO Global Geoparks in the UK.

Visit Arran said: “As you approach the iconic silhouette of Arran, with Goatfell’s jagged lines dominating the sky (if clouds lift to let you have a preview), you will instantly relax and start to get into the way of ‘island life’ for your stay here.

“Being surrounded by water, nature, beautiful landscapes and friendly faces, no matter what direction you look, you will get lost in the character of Arran and be inspired by every new sight or experience on the island.

“It’s a place that stays with you, even when you leave. That’s why people come back, time and time again.”
