Thousands of international students around the world are being impacted by the Trump administration’s decision to ban or restrict travel from 19 countries, according to the Associated Press.
“You think that finally you are going to your dream, and then something came up and like, everything’s just gone,” Bahara Saghari, a 21-year-old student from Afghanistan, told the Associated Press.
Many students are also not choosing to attend U.S. colleges and universities because of ongoing issues with visa applications and because of immigration enforcement activity, which has led to some students’ visas being suddenly terminated.
As a result, many students are applying to attend college or university in other parts of the world.
“You lose this idealistic view of the world. Like you think, if I work hard, if I’m talented, if I contribute, I have a place somewhere else, basically somewhere you want to be,” Amir, a 28-year-old Iranian graduate, who did not disclose his last name for fear of being targeted, told the Associated Press. “And then you learn that, no, maybe people don’t want you there. That’s kind of hard to deal with it.”
