North Korea is expected to reopen to limited international tourism later this year, marking the end of a nearly five-year closure due to the pandemic.

Beijing-based Koryo Tours and Shenyang-based KTG Tours each announced the news, with Koryo Tours revealing plans to resume trips to North Korea this December and KTG Tours touting a winter reopening on its Facebook page.

Initial tour groups will be allowed to visit Samjiyon, a city located near the Chinese border. Samjiyon is near volcano Paektu Mountain, a popular destination for tour groups.

Tour dates, itineraries and pricing have yet to be finalized. Koryo Tours said more information is expected in the coming days and weeks.

KTG Tours hinted at the possibility of soon receiving confirmation to expand visits to Pyongyang and other locations in North Korea.
