A book which has mysteriously roamed thousands of miles has been returned to a school in Tring, more than 100 years since it was given out.
Tring School’s learning resources manager Mrs Watkins was astonished when she was contacted by a man from Australia. The man was reaching out on behalf of his neighbour, who wanted to donate a book back to the school.
The book, True to the Old Flag, was given as a prize for arithmetic to Edward Cracknell, a former pupil at the school, in September 1914. Unfortunately, the sender had no information about Edward and could shed no further light on how the book had made its way to Australia.
Perplexed and entertained by this fascinating relic, the school has now issued a plea to the community.
A spokesperson for the school said: “We would love to hear from anyone who might be a relative of Edward Cracknell, or who may have some information about him.”
