Intrepid Travel has launched a new trip category for travelers interested in rail journeys, with 40 trips available, including three new itineraries traveling across Europe and Mongolia.

Rail travel is growing in popularity as more travelers choose trains over planes as a more sustainable travel method. They’re also more interested in train travel for the slower travel style and the iconic nature of historic rail routes. Intrepid, which is fully carbon neutral, also chose to add the Rail Travel category as part of its decarbonization efforts

The rail journeys offer a slower pace of travel with more countryside scenery, opportunities for local interaction and an average group size of 10-12 travelers, all guided by a local leader to help navigate the trip.

To celebrate the launch of the new trip category, Intrepid has created three new rail journeys.

The 11-day Trans-Mongolian Railway Adventure follows the historic route from the 1940s, beginning in Beijing, China. It travels through China’s scenic landscapes before heading into Mongolia, visiting Hustai National Park, the Gobi Desert and Sainshand before ending in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia’s capital city. The trip begins at $3060 per person.

The second new itinerary is Express to the Orient: Paris to Istanbul, a 15-day trip that takes the same route as the historic Orient Express. Travelers will visit iconic European cities along the way, including Strasbourg, Munich, Salzburg and Belgrade before ending in Istanbul. The trip begins at $4,560 per person.

Lastly, the third new itinerary is Paris to Rome by Rail, a 10-day itinerary taking the Gotthard Panorama Express through Switzerland, which was constructed in 1872. Travelers will view the Alps, stop for visits to castles and for hiking, and even enjoy a farm-to-table Italian cooking demonstration. The trip begins at $4,200 per person.
