While Google searches result in a lot of scrolling and clicks and Wikitravel could lead you down into the weeds before you’ve decided which general location you want to be in, ChatGPT can get you closer to answers more quickly. With ChatGPT, all you need to do is enter your question and it will respond.

What Are Prompts?

ChatGPT works by using prompts to give you the information you’re looking for. Instead of asking “Can you help plan a trip to Bali?” direct the prompts to answer specific questions about your trip. Some great prompts for travel planning include:

  • What are great walking tours in (insert place)?
  • Can you give me a road trip itinerary from (place) to (place)?
  • Are there basic foreign language phrases that are good for (place)?
  • We’d like to visit churches and temples in (place). Can you give me a list of 10 sites to visit within an hour drive of (place)?
  • Describe the cuisine of (place) and give me some suggestions to try.
  • We have a total travel budget of $500. Suggest a three-day itinerary for (place).

Narrowing the AI search will give you more relevant results. If you were simply to ask AI to generate a trip but you don’t want walking tours, being too broad won’t give you the results you need. Simply tell it to eliminate walking tours from the list of options and it will update the list with other options that are more desirable for your itinerary.

Feel free to get as specific as you want and challenge ChatGPT. The point of using this is to spark ideas and save time. ChatGPT learns by being tested, so feel free to ask difficult questions.

For example, consider a question like this for your travel planning and see what ChatGPT comes up with.

“I’m looking to plan a 7 day trip to London and would be open to taking day trips 2 of those days. We’re looking to spend $200 a day on hotels and have a $200 a day budget for food and activities. We want to use public transit and don’t mind walking. If there are any unique restaurants we should make sure to include in our trip, feel free to add those in. We don’t want to have more than 3 things to do a day.”

This is the tailored response that ChatGPT gave when asked the above prompt:

“Adjust the itinerary based on your interests and preferences. Have a fantastic trip to London!”

You’ll see that it followed the requests for budget hotels, unique restaurants, a preference for public transit and unique restaurants that we wanted to visit. You can tell ChatGPT to give you a list of new restaurants, tell it that you don’t like museums or even ask what to do if it rains.

The point is to have fun with the tool and think outside of the box. Ask unique questions and be just as specific as you would be with a group of close friends. The more specific of a question that you ask, the better answers you’ll get.
