Colombia

Colombia has emerged as the premier choice for U.S. tourists traveling to South America, and the reasons are clear. Known as the “Country of Beauty,” Colombia’s dedication to highlighting its rich biodiversity—which accounts for 10% of the world’s total—and its vibrant cultural tapestry has garnered multiple global accolades. Most notably, it was named the Best Afro Tourist Destination globally at the recent World Travel Market (WTM).

“Our country’s beauty spans six regions, and as tourism continues to grow to unprecedented levels, destinations like Cali are key attractions. Known for its cultural heritage and festivals like the Petronio Álvarez and the Cali Fair, which occurs in December, this is a place where every beat tells a story,” said Carmen Caballero, President of ProColombia, the country’s promotion agency.

According to Ricardo Berris, Founder & CEO of MI Group USA and Chairman, Global Opportunities Committee of the Atlanta Black Chambers, Cali is the heart of Colombia’s Afro community. “There’s nothing like being with African brothers and sisters, manifesting our rich culture that you’ll only see at the Petronio Álvarez Festival,” he said.

This year, the festival broadens its reach by incorporating new venues such as River’s Boulevard. More than 3,500 artists will be on hand to display traditional musical instruments, offer Pacific culinary delights, and sell handcrafted items. Anticipated to draw in excess of 500,000 attendees, the event serves as a celebration of cultural heritage while also enhancing the local economic landscape.

“Afro-Colombian communities on the Pacific coast embody the principle that ‘nature is culture, culture is conservation.’ Their stewardship is not just a local treasure but a global model for sustainability. This Festival provides the perfect stage to showcase these traditions, celebrating their invaluable contributions to global conservation efforts with flair and vibrancy”, said Daniel García-Peña, Ambassador of Colombia to the US.

Colombia, readily reachable from North America with direct or connecting flights lasting only three to six hours, promises a thrilling journey. With the commencement of the Petronio Álvarez Festival and upcoming events such as COP16 and the Cali Fair, this is an ideal moment to discover Colombia’s charm. The nation is transforming perceptions of beauty with its dedication to preserving its culture and environment.
