The Silk Road, the ancient trade route between Asia and Europe, has always been steeped in romance, conjuring up images of caravans bringing jewels, spices and delicate silks across mountains and deserts. This is the landscape of The Arabian Nights, and the thread that linked East and West, a highway for the exchange of ideas and cultures — as well as goods — for thousands of years. Today it offers a bucket-list rail and road trip. You might visit individual places along the route or take an epic, multi-country tour lasting several weeks.

Journey to the central Asian countries, the so-called Stans (Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan) — or head into China. Browse vibrant bazaars, tour opulent mosques and ancient fortresses, and experience traditional ceremonies and sports. The variety of landscapes and attractions is vast. Here are some specialist tour operators who can put together the ultimate Silk Road holiday.
