Travel expert, Em, claims a chance trip to this European capital city proved to be her ‘best city break in years’ and is just a two-and-a-half hour flight from the UK

If you’re looking for somewhere a little different to escape to on your next city break, one travel expert has highlighted a destination on the continent you may not have thought to consider. Em, who shares budget travel advice via TikTok, revealed she recently enjoyed her “best city break in years”, which she documented in a video.

“It’s not somewhere you would expect,” she began alongside footage of the European city’s picturesque river and architecture. “I booked a couple of nights here at the end of a longer trip as I was flying out of the airport here and I figured I might as well explore.”

As a solo female traveller, Em said she felt safe despite heading through the city’s bustling streets, awash with bars and eateries.

“There was plenty to do – it is such a modern and well-organised city – I would say it almost gives Scandinavian vibes, but is still budget-friendly,” she continued.

Em also praised the city’s free electric taxi service in the old town, whilst the location also benefits from free public Wi-Fi.

“There were water fountains everywhere,” Em continued. “And of course when I visited it almost reminded me of Amsterdam with all the outdoor restaurants and cafes by the canal.” Indeed, Em also pointed out that it was obvious authorities had “really invested in the city’s public spaces.

“The city also has a lovely castle with stunning views, which you can also visit for free,” she said. “The country as a whole is really underrated and you can easily do a day trip – or extend your existing trip – and visit some of the nearby lakes.”

Em closed by also highlight the “very affordable and easy to use” public transport services, but urged visitors to take cash should they wish to use it.

The destination? “If you haven’t guessed already, it is Ljubljana, which is the capital of Slovenia,” she revealed.

“I had an amazing few days here and the city really blew me away. It has everything I love about a city and it is now firmly on my list of places to revisit.”

Meanwhile, Ljubljana’s official tourism website boasts of the city: “One could say it’s like a chameleon – always the right colour for every mood. A city tailored to human needs, cosmopolitan for work, yet green and pleasant for relaxation.
