This beautiful part of the world is one that is often a dream travel destination for tourists and it’s one with a rich history. Barbados is known for its stunning white-sand beaches and crystal-clear waters, making it perfect for swimming, snorkelling, and surfing at spots like Crane Beach.

But it is also the world’s youngest republic, after on November 30, 2021, the country officially removed the UK’s Queen Elizabeth II as head of state. At the stroke of midnight, a 21-gun salute in the capital, Bridgetown, signalled the handover to the country’s first president and new head of state, Dame Sandra Mason. As the then Prince of Wales, now King Charles, attended the ceremony, Prime Minister Mia Mottley retained her powers as head of the government. The island has a rich history, with UNESCO-listed Bridgetown offering pretty architecture and the historic Garrison.

You can explore Harrison’s Cave, a limestone cavern with underground streams and stalactites which is a popular spot for tourists to head to.

Barbados is the birthplace of rum, so a visit to the Mount Gay Rum Distillery for a tasting is a must.

The island’s lively culture, with festivals like Crop Over and its vibrant music scene, makes it an exciting and welcoming destination year-round.

Barbados has a warm temperate climate – it is hot and humid all year around and in March temperatures can reach as high as 30C.

If you’re planning to visit, you can’t miss Carlisle Bay which is a favourite among holiday makers.

One visitor to the island said on Tripadisor: “Carlisle Bay Beach, located in Bridgetown, Barbados, is one of the island’s most stunning and popular beaches.

“Known for its calm, crystal-clear turquoise waters and soft white sand, it is a favorite spot for swimming, sunbathing, and water sports.

“The bay is also a haven for snorkelers and divers, as several shipwrecks lie beneath its waters, attracting vibrant marine life, including sea turtles, tropical fish, and rays.”

If you’re looking for a spring or summer break, Barbados could be the perfect place to enjoy a sunny holiday this year.
