Bamburgh has once again been crowned among the top seaside destinations in the country where visitors can stay in a cottage overlooking its iconic castle
Just weeks after being crowned the UK’s best seaside destination for the fifth year in a row, one Northumberland village has yet another accolade under its belt. Bamburgh has just taken the number two spot in a survey by Travelodge to find the best beaches in the UK thanks to its award-winning golden sands.
The travel experts described this village and its “breathtaking” beach as the “ultimate escape” for anyone planning a picturesque getaway on UK shores. Just an hour away from Newcastle by car, Bamburgh is steeped in centuries of history and is sure to fill visitors of all ages with awe with its striking scenery.
For those hoping to pay a visit to Bamburgh to see what all the fuss is about, there are plenty of places to stay in the village to allow holidaymakers to make the most of their trip to Northumberland. One top-rated choice is Castle View, which as its name suggests looks directly on to Bamburgh Castle from a feature window in its living room.
Available to book via Sykes Holiday Cottages and priced from £638 for a seven-night stay, this single storey cottage has room for up to four guests with up to two dogs welcome. Guests can also enjoy the views of Bamburgh Castle from the small enclosed patio.
Castle View is just a 15-minute walk away from Bamburgh Castle and Bamburgh Beach, as well as being just around the corner from The Potted Lobster, the best restaurant in the village according to Tripadvisor reviews which specialises in fresh, locally sourced seafood. A five-minute walk will also bring visitors out on to the main street where they will find famous tearoom The Copper Kettle, while ice cream in an array of mouth-watering flavours is available at Wyndenwell a couple of doors down.

This isn’t the only cottage in Bamburgh offering guests views of the village’s iconic castle. Another favourite is Finn Cottage, a “warm and welcoming” white terraced cottage available to book on holidaycottages.co.uk where visitors can see the medieval fortress in all its grandeur from the back garden.
Priced from £722 for a seven-night stay with room for up to four guests and a dog, this two-bedroom holiday home has a BBQ, a picnic table and chairs outside so guests can make the most of the castle views. Read more about this cottage in the heart of Bamburgh here.
Those seeking a stay in or around the village also have a selection of hotels and B&Bs to choose from along this stretch of the coast. The top recommendation in Bamburgh itself on Booking.com according to guest reviews is The Victoria Hotel, which is just a 10-minute walk away from Bamburgh Castle and has 29 rooms priced from £160 per night as well as its own bar and restaurant.
This hotel was hand-picked by The Hotel Guru as the best place to stay when discovering all of Bamburgh’s gems, with the experts writing: “The Victoria Hotel is right in the shadow of Bamburgh Castle, so it’s ideal for seeing the sights in Bamburgh, but also ideal for exploring the whole region. Some rooms have castle views, but some have rural views, giving the feel of a countryside escape. It’s great value too.”
While Bamburgh Castle is undoubtedly a must-visit, it’s not the only place where visitors can uncover the village’s fascinating history. Just five minutes away from Castle View cottage is the RNLI Grace Darling Museum, which tells the story of the local lighthouse keeper’s daughter who rescued nine men from a devastating shipwreck on the nearby Farne Islands in 1838. The museum is home to famous boat used by Grace and her father during the incredible rescue, as well as personal items and portraits of the Darling family.
