Many people are on the lookout for underrated destinations this summer. With overtourism gripping cities and seaside towns across Spain, Portugal and beyond, heading off the beaten track could offer a much better experience.
The biggest benefit? Not having to deal with huge crowds while still enjoying stunning scenery, history and culture. Gavin Lapidus, Company Director at travel firm eShores, has shared his top picks for Europe’s most overlooked destinations, perfect for anyone looking for something a little different in 2025.

Gjipe Beach, Albania
This remote spot on the Albanian Riviera is one of the country’s best-kept secrets.
“What really makes Gjipe Beach a true hidden gem is how you access it,” Gavin said.
“Visitors must either take a scenic boat ride, or be prepared to put on their walking boots.”
With its clear turquoise waters and rugged cliffs, Gjipe is far quieter than most European beach destinations.
Adventurous travellers can hike the nearby canyon, explore sea caves or go kayaking.

Picos de Europa, Spain
Most people picture sunny beaches when they think of Spain, but Gavin recommends heading north.
“The stunning mountain range of Picos de Europa rivals the Alps with its snow-covered peaks and beautiful walking trails,” he said.
Ideal for hikers, climbers and nature lovers, the peaceful trails and cosy mountain lodges make it a perfect escape.
Visitors can also enjoy traditional Asturian cider, which is produced in the region.

Kotor is becoming more popular with travellers, and for good reason.
The bay is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with a mix of medieval charm, coastal beauty and historic villages.
“You can explore quieter spots like Perast and Dobrota, sample local almond cake, and take in views from St Nicholas Church’s bell tower,” Gavin said.
With peaceful beaches and authentic culture, the area offers a more laid-back alternative to Europe’s busier coastal cities.

Dubbed the “Venice of the Alps,” Annecy offers picturesque canals set against a mountain backdrop.
The old town is filled with weekly markets and traditional Savoyard food, but without the heavy crowds you’d find in Venice.
It’s perfect for a romantic weekend or relaxed city break.

While Barcelona continues to deal with overtourism, Valencia remains a less crowded, but just as impressive, option.
It’s home to the famous City of Arts and Sciences, a wide sandy beach, and the original paella.

Often called Europe’s answer to the Caribbean, the Azores are a group of volcanic islands in the middle of the Atlantic.
With crater lakes, hot springs and world-class whale watching, they’re ideal for nature lovers.
