Cardiff’s Oasis fans have been warned to plan their journey and make sure they arrive early as thousands of people are expected to clog up the city’s roads and public transport
Thousands of Oasis fans are descending on Cardiff’s Principality Stadium this weekend for the band’s epic comeback show. Brothers Liam and Noel Gallagher will reunite on stage for the first time in 16 years later today and on Saturday, July 5.
Fans started queuing up outside the venue over 24 hours before they’re due to hit the stage in an effort to soak up the atmosphere and secure their spot when doors open. It is not just music lovers who have been getting prepared though, as the city is also bracing itself for an influx of fans on its roads and public transport.
Significant road closures will be implemented around the capital in preparation for the concerts, which open their doors at 5pm. For the Oasis concerts, city centre roads will be shut from midday and are expected to reopen at the stroke of midnight.
A Cardiff Council spokesperson earlier in June advised: “The M4 motorway is expected to be very busy for these concerts – so please plan ahead – and avoid the congestion in Cardiff by using the park and ride at the car park by the Vindico Arena on International Drive in the Sports Village – CF11 0JS.
“For up-to-date traffic information on the motorway and trunk roads, go to the Traffic Wales website, or @TrafficWalesS on Twitter and Facebook.”, reports Wales Online.
Concertgoers are being urged to meticulously plan their journey and arrive in Cardiff early. It’s also important to heed the list of prohibited items, especially the bag policy which disallows large bags, before heading into the city.
What roads will be closed?
From 7am, Scott Road and Park Street will be shut due to preparations at gate five and to ensure the safety of queuing fans. A full city centre road closure will be in effect on July 4 and 5, commencing at 12noon and lasting until midnight.
Access to certain areas of the civic centre will be regulated throughout the day, with entry permitted only for event parking, limited commuter parking, loading and access to private car parks.
Roads impacted include King Edward VII Avenue, Museum Avenue, City Hall Road, College Road and Gorsedd Gardens Road.
Traffic Wales have already put out a warning ahead of the Oasis shows as they urged: “Don’t get caught out- check before you travel and allow extra time for your journey.”
They report traffic on the M4 increases by around 15% when large events are taking place. The majority of road works will occur on the M4, which can increase travel time, but are often completed with overnight or lane closures.
Their advice reads: “Plan ahead. Check the latest traffic information before you travel. Check your vehicle before setting off. Allow extra time for your journey.”
How are the trains?
As of Friday morning, Transport for Wales have a good service running. There had been disruptions between Merthyr Tydfil / Aberdare / Treherbert and Cardiff Queen Street on Thursday evening into Friday morning that has since cleared.
It is always best to check before you travel with your train operator or National Rail Enquiries.
