World Cup travelers heading through New York and New Jersey have been warned to plan around severe weather rather than gamble with unsafe conditions.
New York City mayor Zohran Mamdani issued the alert after a clear weekend, with storms expected to return just as fans prepare for another busy tournament day.
The message was simple: move early, use transit and do not treat flooded streets as shortcuts.

Zohran Mamdani severe thunderstorm warning hits World Cup travel
In a NYC Mayor post, Mamdani warned residents and visitors that storm conditions could make travel dangerous across New York City.
He wrote: “After a perfect weekend, rain and storms are returning to New York City tomorrow.”
Mamdani added: “Rain will likely begin late in the morning, intensify throughout the afternoon, and continue overnight. We may experience severe thunderstorms with wind gusts reaching up to 50 mph.”
The warning also told people to exercise caution while traveling, take public transit whenever possible and never walk, bike or drive through floodwaters.
City agencies had already been preparing. Mamdani said catch basins had been cleared, flood-prone neighborhoods had been inspected and downed-tree and tow-truck task forces were on alert.

The timing matters because World Cup traffic is already stretching the region.

New York New Jersey Stadium is scheduled to host Norway vs Senegal at 8 PM on June 22, meaning fans could be moving through the area as rain and thunderstorms continue into the night.
That creates a direct travel concern for supporters using NYC as a base, especially those moving toward Secaucus, East Rutherford, fan zones or watch parties around the city.
Officials have already urged spectators to rely on NJ Transit and official shuttle options rather than driving near the stadium. Walking along nearby roadways is also considered unsafe and restricted.
This is not Mamdani’s first weather warning as mayor. His office has used Notify NYC and official channels for previous flood and storm alerts, including guidance for basement flooding and severe weather preparation.
For World Cup fans, the takeaway is practical, not dramatic. Check alerts, leave extra time, expect delays and do not risk floodwater for a soccer match. No destination is worth that trade.
