A unique travel item that retails for under £20 has been praised as a safety essential by female solo travellers.
The She’s Birdie personal safety alarm is a portable device which makes a loud noise and lights up when activated.
Travellers can use the alarm if they feel threatened by someone with the She’s Birdie team saying it could ‘distract attention’.
The product description says: ‘When threatened, turn on the loud siren and the Birdie flashing strobe light to distract attention and avoid an attack.
‘Carry Birdie day or night around town, when walking your dog, on the trails, across campus, to your car, in the parking lot, on public transport, when travelling Birdie gives women security in their daily lives.’
Mariana (@mydlvz1) demonstrates how to use the device in a TikTok video, saying: ‘Every girl needs to have this.’
She explains: ‘You attach it to your keychain. If you’re outside and somebody creepy is coming up to you, you unlatch this and then it gets super loud.’
She demonstrates the noisy alarm, explaining that its volume meant she could only do so outside or people inside would get ‘freaked out’.

Mariana adds: ‘And then you just stick the pin back in to make it shut off. But honestly this is going with me everywhere.’
In another video TikToker, @susanluckhardt says: ‘Not to sound dramatic or anything but this product could literally save lives.
‘I personally believe you can never be too safe. I’ve even taught my four-year-old daughter to use this.’
In a video posted on the @shesbirdie account, one U.S TikToker says she prefers to carry a Birdie over pepper spray.
The woman says: ‘Instead of having to fumble with your pepper spray, you just pull this tab and it makes a really loud noise. I personally would just use Birdie over pepper spray.’
And one traveller says she’s ‘so glad’ she brought the alarm on her holiday to Portugal. In the TikTok, @hannahchasinghappy explains the product makes her ‘feel much more safe’.
The traveller says the alarm will ‘hopefully act as a deterrent and keep you safe’.
