I visited a beautiful town in the Lake District on a whim, and it’s a beautiful location that I encourage others to visit — here’s why.

It was a Thursday evening when I found myself in Windermere, in the Lake District — and what a picturesque sight it was.

Windermere is home to the largest lake in the Lake District National Park, so embarking on a boat tour was an absolute necessity.

There are several options for boat tours, but I opted for the last Island Blue Cruise (£14.20) of the day.

Prior to boarding the 45-minute lake tour, I picked up some fish and chips from Driftwood and a pint of beer to enjoy onboard.

As I sat on the open-top boat, I half-listened to the audio tour, sipped my refreshing pint, nibbled on my fish and chips, and took in the views.

The landscape was truly breathtaking. Grassy mountainous backdrops, gorgeous boats, glistening water, and grand houses all contributed to the view.

After the tour, there was time for a few more drinks while taking in the lake view and browsing a few homeware shops.

Although I had already enjoyed my dinner on the boat, there were numerous alfresco dining options where I could have savoured the final moments of sunlight.

Luckily for me, my Airbnb was just a short walk from the location of the boat tour.

Fast-forward to the following morning, it was now time to fully experience what Windermere had to offer during daylight hours.

I began with a leisurely breakfast at Betty Fluffs Emporium, indulging in a bacon and egg sandwich on toasted bread accompanied by a latte.

The area also boasts a variety of boutique, independent and chain shops to browse – and had I brought along a dog, a delightful long walk would have been on the agenda.

My verdict

Water sports enthusiasts will find this staycation spot appealing for activities such as canoeing, paddle boarding, sailing, and boat tours.

The stunning scenery is perfect for those seeking a romantic getaway, and if you’re planning a long weekend visit, there are late-night bars for those looking for a livelier evening.

While I decided to visit Windermere on a whim, it’s a picturesque location that I would highly recommend to others.

As for my next escapade, another location in the Lake District has certainly caught my eye.
