A couple were left baffled after they noticed a four-letter code on their boarding passes which meant they had to undergo additional security checks before boarding their flight
A couple were left utterly perplexed at the airport recently when they found cryptic letters on their boarding pass that resulted in them being separated. Airports can be a thrilling place as you check-in for your flight, browse through the shops and maybe grab a bite before jetting off.
However, it also demands a fair bit of organisation from travellers and adherence to security protocols. One holidaymaker, Jordyn Verzera, was puzzled after spotting an enigmatic stamp on her ticket – and she shared her experience in a viral video on her TikTok account @themobilehomie.

She noticed a code reading ‘SSSS’ on her ticket. This mysterious code meant she had to undergo additional security checks by the USA Transportation Security Administration, leading to a frantic bag search, swabs, and ultimately, an unexpected separation from her boyfriend before their flight.
The comments section was inundated with viewers seeking clarification: “What does it mean?”, queried one. “Is it random?” asked another.
“Do they cover your missed flight if it makes you late? ,” pondered another. Some could empathise all too well, as one shared: “Me and my BF both got SSSS when we went to San Francisco!”.
Another concurred, adding: “This happened to my dad-we were delayed forever! I always get that since I was little, so we arrive two hours early just in case,” revealed another.
Travel Republic has shed light on the mystery of the ‘SSSS’ stamp that appears on certain boarding passes, offering tips to sidestep airport stress, reports the Express.
The ‘SSSS’ mark stands for Secondary Security Screening Selection, indicating that the passenger is due for extra security checks before they board. This could mean more bag searches, hand swabs, and questioning, potentially causing delays at the airport.
This heightened security process mainly applies to flights heading to or within the United States, but it’s not solely a U.S. travel issue. Unprepared passengers can find themselves facing longer airport delays, additional bag searches, and even missed flights due to this four-letter code.
According to the travel experts, making a last-minute booking could land you with an ‘SSSS’ stamp. The exact selection process remains somewhat shrouded in mystery, but it’s generally tied to random selection, travel history, last-minute bookings, one-way flights, or international travel to specific destinations.
Passengers with mismatched travel details or frequent flyer activity that raises eyebrows might also be more prone to getting the stamp. By preparing ahead of time, you can dodge unnecessary delays and make your security experience as stress-free as possible.
How to avoid stress at the airport
Arriving early is key – extra screening can take anywhere from 10 minutes to over an hour, so factor in some buffer time before your flight.
Being cooperative is also crucial – security checks can be frustrating, but staying calm and following instructions can help speed up the process.
Have your documents at hand – Ensure your boarding pass and passport are readily available for multiple checks.
Be prepared – Expect additional bag searches, hand swabs, and potential questioning, so don’t be taken by surprise.
Pack your hand luggage wisely – Make sure your bag meets security requirements and is easy to search by using transparent pouches for liquids, keeping electronics within easy reach, and avoiding overstuffing your luggage.
