Michael Akers from FoWS led the group, extending his very successful Bridges of Preston Guided Walk all the way to the M6. Michael was supported by Paul Cullen of FoWS as cycling steward, and had 12 participants.
Patricia Harrison, Chair of FoWS, said: “Michael approached me with the idea of an evening cycle tour and I thought it was a great idea, but we had no idea if it would work. It was fully booked in the two days after it was listed on Facebook and we have had lots of requests to repeat it during the day. So, I am delighted that Michael has agreed to add another date to cater for those disappointed not to get a place on the first event.”

Michael said about the first tour: “The new guided cycle tour of Preston’s bridges enabled participants to gain a fuller understanding and appreciation of how crossing the Ribble has been fundamental to the city’s development.
“Beginning at Penwortham Old Bridge, a much-loved elegant Georgian stone structure, our route traced the course of the Ribble and Preston history using the Guild Wheel cycle way. Five miles later we ended our ride through time with a view of the M6 crossing, the first motorway bridge ever to be opened to traffic. Along the way we discovered more about the struggles and triumphs faced by the builders of Preston’s bridges, how each bridge has impacted the city’s growth and stories of personal achievement and tragedy.
“The evening sunshine was a bonus, as was the beautiful valley setting and the occasional thrilling glimpses of wildlife and nature. As we pondered how we had got to the concrete and steel of the M6 bridge, a salmon leapt out of the water. It was a great way to spend a summer’s evening.”
The next guided cycle tour will take place on Saturday 16 August from 2pm to 4pm with tickets available from TryBooking.
