These include Spain, France, Greece, Germany and Italy
The UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) has released new guidance for travel to Europe. In a recent post on X, previously known as Twitter, the FCDO detailed that a rule alteration will come into force on October 12.
Aimed at people planning to travel by Eurostar, ferry, train or car, the alert reminds people that from the above date the European Union (EU) is implementing new border checks. This means British travellers will have their photograph and fingerprint taken prior to boarding, according to the FCDO.
Additional advice on Gov.uk clarifies that the EU’s new Entry/Exit System (EES) will commence on October 12 and that the new system changes rules for Scots and other Brits travelling to Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czechia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland.
Non-EU travellers, including those from the UK, will need to use self-service pre-registration kiosks when travelling by Eurostar from London St Pancras, while those using the Eurotunnel at Folkestone will be directed to a specially designed pre-registration area to use self-service pre-registration kiosks.
British and other non-EU passengers travelling via ferry from Dover will be processed through kiosks at the Western Docks before heading to their ferry terminal. Non-EU visitors flying or using ferry services from other ports will complete registration upon arrival at their destination within the Schengen zone.
Guidance continues: “If you are flying to a country in the Schengen area, you may experience longer queue times when you arrive at your destination.

“Your digital EES record is valid for 3 years. If you enter the Schengen area again during this time, you will only need to provide a fingerprint or photo at the border, when you enter and exit.”
