A restaurant owner in Glasgow has said he decided to open today in spite of Storm Eowyn to help people who may be stranded in the Scottish city.

Djamel Benouari told our Scotland correspondent Connor Gillies that he is open for business with the help of staff who live locally, despite there being a red warning for wind in place until 5pm.

He said: “What happened five or six years ago, when the Beast from the East hit the UK, I wasn’t meant to open then, but I started to get people at the door telling me they were stranded.

“So I learnt from my experience and thought: ‘This might happen again’.

“With minimum staff and a skeleton crew in the kitchen, I decided to open to cater for these people again.”

Mr Benouari said his decision has already helped many people, some of whom are tourists who do not have access to food or drink.

“A lady walking by this morning asked if I was open for coffee, and I said absolutely 100%,” he continued.

“She was the first of many, who were sitting in hotels, flights cancelled with nowhere to go to get a coffee or food and drink.”
