As the entire island of Ireland is put on red alert, Storm Eowyn is already breaking records in the early hours of the morning.

A new record windspeed has been recorded by the Irish weather service Met Eireann at their Mace Head weather station in Co Galway, with a gust of 183kmh, or 114 miles per hour at 5am.

It breaks the record of 182kmh, which has stood since 1945 and was recorded at Foynes in Co Limerick. Met Eireann has measured these speeds since 1942.

Average windspeed has also provisionally been broken, with Mace Head recording mean speeds of 135kmh. The record stands at 131kmh (84kmh).

The Sky News team is in Lahinch, Co Clare, also on the west coast, and conditions are wild with the wind noticeably increasing at around 2am, blowing tiles off the roof of our hotel.

Power outages and downed trees have already been reported across counties including Co Kerry, and there are still hours to go as Eowyn takes grip across the island of Ireland.
