The airline said: “Extra security measures are currently being applied to flights from Turkey, Tunisia, Jordan, Morocco and Egypt to the UK”
EasyJet has issued a ‘please check’ alert to passengers heading to the popular European destination of Turkey. The carrier is reminding travellers to “please check that your passport is valid” before setting off.
Brits could encounter issues if their passport doesn’t meet the entry requirements outlined by the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs or local consular advice, such as the FCDO website. While visas are typically not needed for most EU citizens or British passport holders for tourist visits under 90 days within a 180-day period, there are exceptions.
“However, there are exceptions such as service passport holders, or British Overseas Citizens, so please check up to date advice before you travel,” EasyJet advises. Travellers may require additional documentation beyond a passport or ID card to pass through border security and continue their journey or holiday.
Since January 1, 2015, passports must have at least 60 days validity beyond the expiry of your visa, e-visa, visa exemption, or residence permit. If your visa permits a 90-day stay, ensure your passport is valid for at least 150 days (90 days + 60 days) from the date of entry.
For tourism or business purposes, an e-Visa can be obtained online at www.evisa.gov.tr. Those intending to work or study in Turkey need to secure a regular visa from Turkish Embassies or Consulates, reports Lancs Live.
If you hold a British National (Overseas), British Overseas Citizen, British Protected Person, British Subject, or British Overseas Territories Citizen passport, it’s essential to verify visa requirements with the Turkish Consulate General before travelling. For the most current travel advice and entry stipulations, refer to Gov.uk.
The warning is issued in anticipation of the Easter holiday period; with upcoming bank holidays, a significant number of families are expected to travel. Additional security measures have been implemented for those travelling to Turkey, Tunisia, Jordan, Morocco, and Egypt.
As stated on EasyJet’s official website: “Extra security measures are currently being applied to flights from Turkey, Tunisia, Jordan, Morocco and Egypt to the UK.” These additional screenings will take place at the gate just before passengers board the aircraft.
EasyJet has addressed some common queries about the heightened security procedures online. Regarding whether travellers should arrive earlier at the airport or gate, the airline clarifies: “There is no requirement to come to the airport earlier than shown on your confirmation email, but please make sure you arrive at the gate as soon as your gate is announced.”
EasyJet has confirmed that passengers are allowed to bring personal electronic items such as laptops, tablets, and mobiles on board. However, the airline advises: “Yes.”
But it also cautions: “However, please make sure your devices are charged, as you may be asked to turn them on during the security check. If you cannot turn on your device, you may be required to travel without it or place your item for safe carriage in the hold.”
The airline has made it clear that it will not provide chargers at the gate. “Our aim is we will tell all of our passengers what the requirements are so they will be fully aware before arriving at the airport,” EasyJet states.
These extra security measures apply to all flights departing from Turkey, Egypt, and Tunisia, as well as flights to the UK only, from Morocco and Jordan. For those flying from Egypt, Jordan, or Morocco, EasyJet notes: “Due to local security regulations, all passengers, including passengers with cabin bags only, must go to Bag Drop before going through .”
