BBC travel series Celebrity Race Across The World is coming to a close on Thursday night as the contestants try to get to the final destination first

After weeks of racing across Central America, the contestants on Celebrity Race Across The World are approaching their final destination.

The popular BBC travel series comes to an end on Thursday (December 11) night when viewers will see which of the four pairs reach the last checkpoint first and claim victory.

There have been plenty of highs and lows since the teams set off on their travels from the idyllic Caribbean island of Isla Mujeres, just off the easternmost point of Mexico, before racing 5,900km towards the finish line in the remote Península de La Guajira in Colombia – the gateway to South America.

At one point, the BBC was forced to modify the rules and allow the celebrities to catch a flight after safety concerns due to planned strikes on the approach to Medellin in Colombia.

Now broadcaster Anita Rani and her dad Bal, siblings Roman and Harleymoon Kemp, actor Dylan Llewellyn and his mum Jackie and DJ Tyler West and his actress girlfriend Molly Rainford have the finishing line in sight.

Ahead of the final, Tyler admitted that the trip was far from easy and even admitted to “full trauma” following their time in Costa Rica when they slept in hammocks in the jungle covered in nets in a bid to keep all the insects at bay.

In a new interview, Molly said: “I think Costa Rica was a bit traumatic, because it felt like we were on I’m a Celeb! We couldn’t have slept closer together, because we were both didn’t want to touch the sides. That was so hard – facing your fears in the treehouse.”

Tyler added: “I still have nightmares about Costa Rica. I can’t, that’s full trauma.”

But despite wrestling with the jungle critters, Tyler admitted that it probably wasn’t their biggest challenge during the trip.

He said: “Our biggest challenge has been budget. It’s maths, and it always, and forever will be maths. Our budgeting hasn’t got better during the race, it’s just made us stop and think, can we really afford it? We’ve just got tighter!”

Tyler added that he was surprised how they were during the experience. He said: “I think the way that we dived into it, considering how different it is to how we normally travel. I think it caught us off guard a bit. We became Tyler and Molly 2.0, thinking we were Bear Grylls – but we’re definitely not!

“I think I thought we’d struggle more than we did, but we found moments to have a laugh throughout the whole journey.”

The finale of Celebrity Race Across The World is on BBC One on Thursday, December 11 at 8pm
