Canada is amongst a list of countries in Europe that have issued advisories about travelling to the United States. As the Trump administration cracks down on immigration enforcement, foreign nationals are being warned they could run into problems if they fail to follow American entry rules.
On Friday evening, the Canadian government updated its travel advice for people planning to travel south of the border. The update indicated visitors are required to register with the U.S. government if they plan to stay in the country for longer than 30 days.
“Failure to comply with the registration requirement could result in penalties, fines and misdemeanor prosecution,” the travel advisory noted, adding people can check the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services website to see if they must register and how they can do so.
The updated guidelines come as other countries advised their own citizens to take caution when it comes to entering the U.S. In Europe, countries like the United Kingdom, Germany, Denmark and Finland have issued similar advisories:
While the advisories aren’t strict recommendations against travelling to the U.S., the new guidelines come at a time when foreigners have been detained and deported by American officials. This includes a Canadian woman named Jasmine Mooney, who explained she felt like she had been “kidnapped” after being detained earlier this month after she applied for a visa at the U.S.-Mexico border.
“One minute, I was in an immigration office talking to an officer about my work visa. … The next, I was told to put my hands against the wall, and patted down like a criminal before being sent to an ICE detention centre without the chance to talk to a lawyer,” Mooney, an entrepreneur from Vancouver, wrote in a piece for the Guardian.
After the Canadian government announced its updated travel advice for the U.S., social media users shared how they wanted officials to take it a step further.
“We need to have a travel warning issued. The USA is no longer safe for Canadians,” one X user stated.
“Now do a travel warning. The U.S. is routinely violating international law, and depriving non citizens of their rights,” another added.
“Canadians are way ahead in realizing this, but it’s good to see officialdom in the federal government realizing the United States under the Musk-Trump regime is a hostile country,” one person wrote.
