Since Saturday September 13, the Roman site of Banys de la Reina in Calpe will be open to visitors on a regular basis, offering tourists and locals the chance to explore one of the most important archaeological sites of Roman Hispania. Free guided tours will be available from Wednesday to Sunday.
The opening follows adaptation works funded by the Provincial Council with €439,388, which have allowed the site to be properly museumised. The Calpe Town Hall has appointed Esatur XXI to manage visitor information and guided tours. The company has experience with other sites, including Illeta dels Banyets in Campello and Lucentum in Alicante.
Three daily tours will run from Wednesday to Saturday at 10:00, 11:30 and 13:00, with two tours on Sundays and public holidays at 10:00 and 12:00. Groups will be limited to 25 people, with each tour lasting approximately 50 minutes. Tours will be conducted in Spanish or Valencian, with English offered depending on demand. Visitors are advised to arrive 10 minutes early, wearing appropriate clothing and footwear, and bringing sun protection and water. Advance registration is required, either at the site or by emailing cabdelareina@esatur.com
A monumental Roman complex
To mark the opening, the Town Hall hosted a public information session at the site on Friday September 12.
Culture Councillor Guillermo Sendra said: “We can finally open this important site to the public on a regular basis. It is the culmination of the Culture Department’s work to ensure everyone can appreciate and value this unique place.”
The Banys de la Reina site, declared a Cultural Interest Asset in March 2022, dates from the late 2nd to the 7th century AD and is one of the most remarkable and monumental Roman complexes on the Spanish Mediterranean coast.
