The busiest airport in the world for international travel, the Dubai International Airport (DXB) has set a record, with 92.3 million passengers passing through its terminals in 2024, officials confirmed on Thursday. This milestone is a significant recovery for the airport following the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, surpassing the previous record of 89.1 million passengers who set foot at DXB in 2018.

The airport now faces overwhelming demand, the increase in aircraft movement and heavy passenger traffic have prompted plans for a shift in operations over the next decade. Subsequently, a $35 billion upgrade is underway to move activities to the city’s second airport, Al Maktoum International over the next 10 years.

Dubai’s ruler, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, shared the news on social media platform X, proudly highlighting the achievement. “Dubai is the airport of the world … and a new world in the aviation sector,” he wrote.

In 2023, DXB welcomed 86.9 million passengers, and its 2019 numbers stood at 86.3 million. Before the pandemic, 2018 marked the airport’s busiest year with 89.1 million passengers. In contrast, 66 million passengers travelled through the airport in 2022.

The city’s booming real estate sector and record-breaking tourism numbers have cemented Dubai as a sought-after destination, not just as a layover hub. However, the rapid growth has also led to increased traffic and rising costs, putting pressure on both the local Emirati population and the expatriate workforce that drives Dubai’s economy.

Looking ahead, Dubai aims to shift its aviation operations to Al Maktoum International Airport (DWC), located approximately 45 kilometres (28 miles) from DXB. Opened in 2010 with a single terminal, DWC served as a parking site for Emirates’ Airbus A380s and other aircraft during the pandemic but is now gradually being reactivated for cargo and private flights. DWC also hosts the biennial Dubai Air Show and has ample space for future expansion. Together, DXB and DWC serve 106 airlines operating flights to 272 cities across 107 countries.
