Those flying with British Airways during the summer holidays, one of the busiest travel periods, could benefit from a ‘faster and smarter’ journey following an airline update

British Airways has launched a major update for passengers that could make travel this summer even easier.

Holidaymakers flying with British Airways will benefit from live journey updates, faster access to boarding passes and nifty self-service options, including the chance to amend bookings through the airline’s mobile app. This comes as British Airways announced the rollout of its new mobile app this week, designed as a “faster, smarter, more reliable travel companion” to make passengers’ journeys easier.

The newly improved British Airways app is being progressively rolled out to customers, with additional features and updates expected in the next few months. There are also plans to introduce a real-time baggage-tracking system in the app for passengers and to expand its self-service offerings.

The full list of new features that are available through the new app includes the following, as outlined by British Airways:

  • Fresh new look and feel with a modern design and intuitive navigation
  • Full integration of essential travel tasks, including booking, managing check-in and accessing digital boarding passes. These will always be available in the app and can be saved to Apple and Android mobile wallets, even when offline
  • Powered by real-time operational data, the app delivers live journey updates when travelling out of London Heathrow and Gatwick, as well as alerts and reminders, including timely push notifications before and during travel across our network
  • A new ‘day of travel’ home screen that shows users the most relevant information at the right time
  • Increased self-service options, making it easier for customers to manage bookings independently
  • Passport scanning to minimise physical document checks
  • Biometric and secure profile management
  • Airport-specific features, including interactive terminal maps and lounge occupancy information for customers travelling through London Heathrow Terminal 5

Colm Lacy, British Airways’ Chief Commercial Officer, said: “We listened to our customers and recognised the need for a different app, one that prioritises the features that matter most. The new platform provides a strong foundation, enabling us to introduce new functionality more quickly, shaped by customer feedback.

“What’s exciting is that the initial phase of the rollout is just the beginning for us. From greater personalisation to expanded self-service and innovations, we will continue to evolve the app over the coming weeks and months to deliver a more seamless end-to-end and digital experience for our customers.”

In addition, the app will also offer bonus services to its British Airways Club members, allowing them to track their Avios, Tier Points balance and status progress. Members will also be able to check their statements, edit personal details, store passport details for future flights and easily access their redeemable vouchers.

The mobile app is available for free download on iOS and Android devices.

Elsewhere, British Airways issued advice to passengers about the one item they should take to the airport to ‘avoid delays’ at security. On the airline’s website, under the latest guidance and travel updates for customers, the airline urged: “We recommend you carry a copy of the prescription for your medication to avoid delays at security or customs.”

BA’s spokesperson explained: “If you need to take regular medication, it’s important to pack enough essential medication for your personal use on board – and for the first few days of your journey – into your smaller under-seat item of hand baggage. This is in case your hold baggage is delayed for any reason.”
