For those who love the adventure of a city break but can’t bear rubbing shoulders with tourists then France’s “Pink City” might be the perfect alternative. Filled with colourful streets, an ancient centre and vibrant nightlife, Toulouse is famous for its distinctive terracotta brick buildings that glow in warm shades of pink and orange, especially at sunset.
Sitting close to the Spanish border, Toulouse often goes by the nickname ‘La Ville Rose’, meaning The Pink City. Founded by the Romans, Toulouse wins visitors over with its exceptional charm and gives you an idea of French southern identity. Located in southwestern France, the city sits along the banks of the Garonne River and boasts a vibrant mix of history, culture, and modern innovation.
Just a short one hour hop from the UK via plane and a toasty 21C in March, it is hard to see what is not to like.
March brings the soft bloom of spring to France offering a pleasant time to explore the city’s attractions and enjoy the budding blossoms.
For history lovers, Toulouse offers an array of stunning landmarks. The Place du Capitole, the city’s grand central square, is a focal point in the heart of the vibrant city. There are always things going on in the square from day-time market stalls to match day rugby celebrations and newly wedded couples coming out of city hall.
Built in honour of Saint Saturnin (or Sernin), the first Bishop of Toulouse, The Basilique Saint-Sernin, a UNESCO-listed Romanesque church, is another must visit.
Toulouse is known for its delicate patries and hearty, regional cuisine, the iconic cassoulet (a slow-cooked stew) being a must try.
As France’s fourth largest city with a big student population it is impossible to be bored in Toulouse. There is always an opportunity to enjoy a gorgeous meal, have a coffee at a local bistro or enjoy a glass or two at a wine bar.
And it seems Toulouse is the best place to be this year after Lonely Planet named it the ‘best city in the world’ to visit in 2025.
Lonely Planet says: “Often referred to as ‘Paris in Miniature’, Toulouse is a maze-like city overflowing with art galleries in repurposed industrial spaces, excellent food and scenic river and canal banks.”
