The Prince and Princess of Wales will journey to Scotstoun, Scotland for the naming ceremony of HMS Glasgow on Thursday 22 May, it has been announced.

As part of the festivities, the Princess will smash a bottle of whiskey against the ship’s hull before it sets sail. This is part of a historic tradition that marks the official naming of a vessel prior to setting sail. Alongside Prince William, she will also jump aboard the vessel for a tour delivered by the Royal Navy, who will highlight the ship’s unique gadgets.

Afterwards, they will visit a Shipbuilding Academy to speak with apprentices and graduates who will go on to work on similar seacrafts. The couple will learn all about the niche training received by the students who work on craft trades like welding and fabrication – all of which has contributed to the construction of the HMS Glasgow.

Finally, Kate Middleton and Prince William will sit down with the men and women who were tasked with building the enormous ship.
