Millions of people’s journeys back home on Easter Monday could be disrupted by heavy rain.

The Met Office says parts of England and Wales will see up to 15mm of persistent and thundery rain tomorrow.

With 2.01 million expected to hit the roads, according to traffic data collector Inrix, drivers are being warned to expect longer journeys.

The worst delays will likely be between 10am and 12pm.

An area of cloud in the North Sea will spill over into South East England and drift westwards today, leading to dreary grey skies and patchy rain in the south.

Met Office meteorologist Kathryn Chalk said: ‘We’ll see further spells of heavy rain coming in, pushing its way northwards through Easter Monday.

‘Probably a damp start, especially across Wales, central England and northeastern parts as well with further heavy spells of rain here.

‘Further towards the south, if we do see any clouds breaking up we could see heavy showers again in the afternoon.’

The heaviest rain tomorrow will be in a strip from South West England up to East Anglia, she added.

No weather warnings have been issued for the rain tomorrow.

But a yellow weather warning for heavy rain will be in place from 8pm to 11.45pm today for parts of South West England and Wales.

Up to 30mm of rain is expected ‘over a relatively short period of time’, the national weather service says.

A yellow weather warning means that it’s ‘likely’ the weather will impact people’s lives, including bus and train delays.

Thirteen flood warnings – where flooding is expected – are already in effect.

Flooding officials have also put 110 flood alerts in place for areas where flooding is possible, though dozens have been removed in the last 24 hours.
