Hipmunk built the most admired interface in travel search 16 years ago and launched a conversational travel assistant seven years before ChatGPT.

The company disappeared, but the interface problem it solved has returned. AI can now understand a travel request written in plain language. Most products still answer through a stream of text, giving travelers less ability to examine a recommendation than Hipmunk offered in 2010. Across three attempts over 13 years, the interface kept attracting users while the businesses around it shut down.

The history offers two lessons. The forces that hurt Hipmunk still shape the market: thin economics, dominant distribution, and interface ideas that competitors can quickly copy. At the same time, software can increasingly build a screen around a specific decision instead of forcing every decision through the same fixed format.
