Shining a UV light onto an open Hungarian passport will expose a multicoloured musical score.
Contrary to popular belief, this is not the tune to the national anthem, but to Szózat, a 19th-century patriotic piece of music. Interestingly, Szózat was considered but ultimately not chosen as the national song.
Only the melody, not the words, appear on the pages, but if you were to sing along, the lyrics would include “To your homeland without fail, be faithful, O Hungarian!”, and “Here you must live and die!”
Finland
Passports are very serious identity documents and are certainly not to be used as flipbooks, unless you are from Finland.
In 2012, the Nordic nation incorporated a small drawing of a moose into the bottom left-hand corner of each page, which, when flipped through rapidly, appeared to be walking. So loved was the feature that it has since had several iterations.
