All you need to know as Foreign Office issues travel advice update for British tourists visiting all EU countries
- British travellers heading to the EU face new entry requirements as the Foreign Office issues updated guidance.
- From April 10, the EU’s Entry/Exit System (EES) became fully operational across the Schengen area, including popular destinations like Spain, Greece and France.
- Under the new system, Brits must provide fingerprints and have their photo taken at the border to create a digital record. This record will be valid for three years with subsequent visits requiring just one set of biometric data.
- The Foreign Office warns: “EES may take each passenger extra time to complete so be prepared to wait longer than usual at the border.”
- The system replaces passport stamping and aims to monitor visitors’ stay within the Schengen area. Third country nationals can only stay for a maximum of 90 days within any 180-day period.
- For travellers using Dover, Eurotunnel at Folkestone or Eurostar at St Pancras, biometric information will be taken at the border before leaving the UK.
