The Lake District National Park Authority (LDNPA) has released a travel guide for tourists as part of efforts to reduce their impact in the region.
With the festive season being a busy time of year for the local tourism industry, it is hoped that it can be used as a blueprint for how visitors treat the national park over the coming years.
A spokesperson from the LDNPA said: “If you’re heading to the Lake District for a winter break, do what you can to travel sustainably – and see the wonderful landscapes from a new perspective.
“Improving integrated sustainable travel and reducing dependency on private vehicles is one of the nine ambitions in the new Partnership Plan, which has been set out to enhance the Lake District over the next five years.”
Whether by boat, bus, bike, or on foot, the LDNPA is hoping that visitors will relish the opportunity to see the Lakes in a ‘more immersive and eco-friendly’ way.
The spokesperson added: “We are encouraging you to walk, cycle, travel by boat, rail or bus when exploring the Lake District.
Help us look after this spectacular landscape by leaving the car at home and choosing alternative ways to explore the National Park.”
The LDNPA advice follows a guide released by Stagecoach for the winter, highlighting scenic routes across the region in the hope that people will play their part in reducing congestion and carbon emissions.
The LDNPA has set out details on the train services to and from the Lake District, appropriate bus timetables, minibus tours, and steamers and boat cruises.
There are also tips on the best ways to cycle around the National Park, as well as where to find the best walking routes.
