The Oregon Coast has been named one of the best places to visit in 2026 by BBC Travel, citing its 370-mile stretch of cliffs, forests, and the well-known Highway 101 route that passes through coastal towns and whale migration areas. Oregon remains the only U.S. state with a fully public coastline, a status established through legislation passed in 1967, according to KOIN.
Efforts to improve access and transportation continue, including the availability of beach wheelchairs, Mobi-Mats, and an express shuttle service linking Portland to northern coastal communities such as Cannon Beach. The region has also expanded electric vehicle charging stations and promotes local seafood and cycling routes that run parallel to the coast.
The Oregon Coast was included on BBC Travel’s list for its focus on sustainable tourism and transportation. “Sustainable Travel International, which highlighted the increase in charging stations for electric vehicle owners and a new shuttle that connects the state’s largest city to the coast for those who want to skip the driving,” emphasized efforts supporting greener travel options, as per KOIN. The region also hosts Winter Whale Watch Week starting December 27, when volunteers assist visitors at designated sites to view migrating gray whales, said the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department, as noted by Oregon Live. The Oregon Coast appeared alongside destinations such as Montenegro’s coastal communities and Montevideo on BBC Travel’s list of places focused on responsible tourism.
