The ingenious hack even got a round of applause from the Morning Live crew
As the summer holidays approach, many travellers will be hoping for a screen on the backs of plane seats only to find themselves disappointed and spending the rest of the flight trying to keep comfortable and entertained. Morning Live expert Nicky Kelvin has a nifty trick up his sleeve to defeat this dilemma.
Describing himself as an “aviation geek” the frequent flier uses this method to create his own hands-free in-flight entertainment experience on “almost every flight”. And all you need is your phone, phone case, and a sick bag.
Appearing on Morning Live, the travel expert explained: “This is just your average sick bag, you’ll often find these in the seat pocket in front of you.
“If you want in-flight entertainment on your flight, which you probably do but lots of planes now don’t have screens in front of you. So, what you can do with this is create your own in-flight entertainment world.”
To start, grab the sick bag or ask the crew for one if it’s missing from the seat pocket in front of you. Take one of the shorter sides and fold both corners in to make a point.
Attach the point to the back of your phone and slip your phone case over it to secure it. Then open your tray table slightly, wedge the other side of the sick bag in so your phone screen is now facing you, hanging down, and close the tray table, securing the bag between the table and the seat in front of you.
Nicky exclaimed: “There is your phone, your own personal screen with all your movies and shows loaded up! I do that almost every flight.”
Host Gethin Jones seemed quite taken aback by the trick, before talking directly to the camera: “When Nicky showed the team that this morning there was a round of applause. That’s how good it is.”
Elsewhere in the programme, Nicky also shared his top airport tips to “minimise stress, maximise the fun and save you some money” – starting with a destination recommendation; Italy.
The travel expert explained that some destinations are seeing an increase in prices for holidays and travel. But Italy has actually seen a decrease in price compared to this time last year, making it a great surprise addition to budget travel destinations.
When it comes to buying fast-track passes through security, Nicky noted that it is never really a bad idea but there are some situations where it will be much more worthwhile.
For example, if you can’t stand for a long time or if you notice the security queue is a lot longer than you anticipated as you can buy it on your phone when you get to the airport. He also warned that travellers should avoid getting into the “spend, spend, spend” mindset of a holiday as early as the airport.
Nicky said: “Three out of five holidaymakers are said to be buying unnecessary holiday items in the airport. That’s not a problem, it’s nice to treat ourselves. But I’ve got a hack for you on how we can reduce that.
“Some retailers will allow you to buy online and do pick up in-store and some of those in-store pickups are at the shops after security. So it’s a double-whammy, you’re going to save because you get the online prices and you’re going to avoid the security issue because you can pick up your big liquids after security.”
