A travel fan who manages to see the world on a budget around full-time work has shared the “best” spot she’s visited – and it’s not Milan or Albufeira.

Europe boasts an eclectic medley of cultures and landscapes. Whether you’re craving rocky topography for a hiking trip, or you’re an architecture buff looking to explore ancient ruins, or you’re craving escapism and relaxation by lounging on a serene beach enjoying cocktails while the sun goes down, there’s something for everyone.

Travel pro Em, known online as @emsbudgettravel, is amassing a keen following on social media after sharing her insight and experiences of travelling affordably around her 9-5 job. Most of us like to get a holiday booked each year but Em is making it her mission to see as many countries as possible around work.

In a video round up detailing the 15 countries she visited throughout 2024, the travel buff ranked her favourite destinations and those which were a bit of a let down, listing them from “worst to best”. In the number one spot was a potentially surprising entry, Bosnia and Herzegovina.

What makes Bosnia and Herzegovina special?

This country, located in the Balkans, is known for its medieval villages; Dinaric Alps; vast rivers, lakes, and waterfalls; rich historical venues – including many monasteries and mosques – and much more.

It’s home to UNESCO World Heritage site, the Old Bridge of Mostar, and boasts a diverse culture which blends eastern and western elements and influences. Em ventured to the national capital, Sarajev, and the city of Mostar on her trip.

In a photo round-up video shared on TikTok, she shared a scenic image of the country depicting one of its large rivers and stunning forestry and architecture. She added text over the top of the image which read: “Loved everything about this place – so beautiful, affordable and so much to do – I will definitely be back as there’s so much more I want to see in the country.”

In the comments section, people agreed with her assessment. One person said: “Just came back from Bosnia, it was probably the best place I’ve EVER been. Gorgeous and the food was INSANELY affordable”.

Another added: “Agree, Bosnia is such a beautiful country, so underrated, lots to explore, food is amazing and people are so friendly and kind”.

Which countries didn’t she recommend?

Travel and tourism is relatively subjective – what one person loves, another may hate but Em’s least favourite destinations included some beloved hotspots.

Of Albufeira, Portugal, a firm favourite for lots of holidaymakers, the travel guru said: “I knew it would be touristy but the entire Old Town was so expensive and I really struggled to even find Portuguese food.”

In contrast, she added: “Lots of choice for fun day trips though e.g. dolphin spotting, surf lessons”. Another revered destination she wouldn’t be keen to revisit included Milan, Italy.

Em explained: “I didn’t hate Milan but I probably wouldn’t go back. Really liked the spa but everything was very expensive for Italy and didn’t help that it rained the entire time tbh”.

Not all popular destinations came under fire, though. Em heaped praise on Rome, another desirable destination choice for many people, and lauded its rich history and “amazing buildings”.
