Something about being able to explore a new place on foot makes booking a holiday even more relaxing.
Without worrying about renting a car or navigating public transport, there’s no need to consider how you will journey between the top attractions in your chosen destination.
For those yet to book a trip away this year, travel experts at Skyscanner have named the top 10 “most walkable” cities worldwide in 2025 – and a staggering six of them can be found on the continent.
The ranking, based on walking distance from landmark to landmark and other factors like the number of walking trails in the city, has put lesser-known spots in Italy and Spain on the radar.
Named the most walkable destination in the world, it is a gorgeous historic city in the heart of Andalusia, Spain.
Cordoba, Spain
According to Skyscanner, Cordoba is “a wonderful city to visit and explore on foot”, with the lowest walking distance of the top 10 cities. The charming destination was once an esteemed Roman city and a major Islamic centre in the Middle Ages.
The city is famous for its incredible mosque, La Mezquita. Meanwhile, the historic Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is ideal for exploring its winding streets on foot. Other attractions include Palacio de Viana, La Juderia, and Alcazar de los Reyes Cristianos.
Walking around the main attractions takes just 26 minutes (2730 steps), and there are 29 walking trails to enjoy in and around the city.
One visitor on Tripadvisor remarked: “Cordoba was built before cars, so your taxi will probably not be able to take you to the door, but once you are there, you will be able to walk everywhere. It’s a good idea to start at the Roman Bridge, go over and see the models in the Torre de la Calahorra, in particular the model of the original mosque, before you visit the Mesquita, and walk around the narrow streets. Lots of bars, restaurants, shops, museums. The Jewish Quarter is also worth seeing.”
Another said: “There is lots to see and do around the many cobbled streets. Lots of cafes, quaint bars, shops, tapas bars and restaurants. Don’t be afraid to wander down little alleys, as this is where the hidden gems lie. It’s a fantastic couple of days, but wear sensible, comfy shoes as all those cobbles take their toll on your knees and feet.”
A third visitor remarked: “The restaurants we ate at were reasonably priced, not gouging prices like in other cities. In short, for beauty, history, outstanding city design [long, walkable parks], and kind people – Cordoba is your choice. It really amazed us.”
The charming Spanish city topped the list of walkable cities, but Nagasaki in Japan closely followed it. Nagasaki has the lowest crime rate of the top 10 cities, with 531 attractions to explore and an average elevation of just 89 metres.
As for Cordoba’s European competitors, Italy and Monaco were listed for their compact city centres and range of attractions.
