National Geographic has officially recognised the Murray River, along with the newly launched luxury overnight paddlesteamer, PS Australian Star, as one of the best travel experiences in the world for 2025.

The highly prestigious inclusion in the ‘Best of the World’ list was announced this week, spotlighting this quintessentially Australian adventure as a must-visit experience on the global stage.

This award is significant, placing the Murray River as the only Australian destination featured in this year’s list. The inclusion is expected to boost tourism in the region, highlighting the natural beauty of the impressive river.

The list, compiled by National Geographic’s travel editors in collaboration with its experts and expedition leaders, praises Murray River Paddlesteamers, particularly emphasising the luxury and uniqueness of the Australian Star.

Set to debut in June 2025, the Australian Star represents a significant evolution in river cruising featuring luxurious amenities and accommodating up to 38 guests, making it the Southern Hemisphere’s largest paddlesteamer and the world’s only five-star, wood-fired paddlesteamer.

Craig Burgess, Director of Murray River Paddlesteamers, comments on the recognition: “The inclusion of the Murray River and our overnight paddlesteamers on National Geographic’s prestigious list celebrates the rich cultural, natural, and historical significance of the Murray. It is an honour to have our efforts recognised on such a significant platform.”

The 2025 schedule offers cruises ranging from three to seven nights, with fares starting at $2670 per person.

In addition to the paddlesteamer, the Murray River boasts a wonderful selection of serene experiences and offers phenomenal views of one of the world’s longest rivers. One example is a tiny home situated in the heart of the river: the beautiful floating getaway known as the Welcome Swallow Boathouse. It’s a refreshing, cosy retreat giving you the chance to kick back and connect with the tranquil natural beauty of the river.

With the inclusion on National Geographic’s list, the Murray River is set to become a key destination for travellers seeking a blend of luxury and an authentic Australian getaway.

This recognition is anticipated to not only enhance the visibility of the Murray River globally but also contribute substantially to the region’s tourism sector.
